Wall-E Is the First Arabic Language Next-Gen Game

June 22, 2008
wall-e-poster1-bigThis week's game releases don't include anything holding near the anticipation of June 12th's Metal Gear Solid 4, but this Friday one small record will be made. THQ UK and Pluto Games is set to release Wall-E in Arabic, making it the first next-gen game localized for the Middle East.

Luke Keighran, THQ's export sales and marketing manager says:

“It will give us great opportunity to grow promising territories like Saudi and Egypt. It is a solid demonstration of our commitment to the Middle East market. It is Pluto Games’ enthusiasm and drive that made this commercially possible. We do hope it will be the first of a long line up for Arabic titles in the future,”

Wall-E is based on Pixar's upcoming film of the same name, which follows a stranded, lonely robot programed to clean up an Earth covered in trash by displaced human population, refugees of their consumerism that covered the Earth in garbage. Wall-E eventually falls in love with a probe sent to Earth by those refugees. Describing that the “game depicts family virtues through a fun and adventurous story line” Keighran says Wall-E fits the “Middle East's morals” better than most videogames.

Considering how well most game/movie tie-ins turn out, hopefully this won't be the last game translated for the region. How about Metal Gear Solid 4? That could make for some interesting (maybe disastrous) cultural exchange.
